In recent times, the Acai berry has gained a lot of prominence on the world list of super-foods. There is so much hype surrounding this gift of nature that consumers are finding it hard to distinguish between promotional fabrications and actual truths about it.

It is produced by the Acai palm commonly found in the Amazon rain forest and other parts of South America. The fruit is almost 80% pulp but its flesh and pulp are both used for different juices and deserts and even as a flavoring agent in ice cream and liqueur. It has been a staple in the diet of Southern Americans for a long time but its supplies are fast dwindling as it is now marketed as a supplement for all manner of disease.

The Acai berry is said to be an antioxidant, a weight loss aid, effective in enhancing men's virility and it is claimed that it can reverse the effects of chronic diseases and provide cure. But even though there are a lot of remarkable benefits that one can gain from this pulpy purple fruit, it is not as miraculous as they make it appear.

It is by no means a magical solution to weight problems although it does contribute to body weight reduction in a subtle way. First, it is a good suppressant of the appetite and therefore, by eating the Acai berry in higher quantity, it is possible to reduce food intake.

Additionally, the fruit has been shown to increase the body's metabolic rate and as such, it helps in clearing the stock of consumed foods fast. This certainly takes time and the effect cannot be seen overnight as some myths claim.

The Acai berry is also not a magical cure for cancer. However, it does contain polyphenols in significant quantities. This qualifies it as an anti-oxidant and it can thus aid substantially in arming the body in its fight against free radicals.
