I just bought 16 AA nimh batteries on line so I decided to buy this charger to check the value of my battery purchase.
It works great. I ran all my new nimh batteries through it and all the old nicads I was replacing. It sorted out the bad old ones. The charger has four different operating modes to choose from. You have eight seconds to choose a mode after plugging in the unit and placing the batteries. Should be a little longer, but I got through it.
The included manual should also include a magnifying glass!! But it is loaded with good tips.
I had read about overheating in some other models. Not this one. The batteries, charger and power supply never got hotter than a little warm.

Best charger available for the money, it does everything it claims to. I like the various charging and discharging features and once you get the hang of the buttons it's pretty simple to achieve what you want with each cell. The best feature is the fact that each cell is independant and you can switch in a new cell or two while the others are finishing their cycles. This unit is not normally considered for the novice rechargeable user but really it still functions better than a normal charger even if you don't push any buttons simply for the fact it charges the cells independantly so they can each be "the best they can be". I found that cells I was using as a set were each functioning at different levels until the refresh feature was used which brought them closer to the same level. I think the Maha Powerex MH-C9000 is even more appealing for its list of features but for half the price this unit offers a great value if you want to play with some more advanced charging features.
One aspect of this unit some others may not like is one of my favorites, the fact that it has a seperate cord and transformer. This allows me to plug it in on my strip and have the unit up on my desk instead of having to crawl under my desk to change out batteries or check the display.
Not for everyone but I think its a champ!

I have 2 old chargers, one is about 20 years old and the other 10. I just leave batteries in them and swap them out with my remote, etc. I'm pretty techy (build my own computers, put my own alarm system in, etc.) but have no real interest in understanding the finer points of batteries and chargers. I want to be able to charge 1 at a time, leave it in there, and use it later. I also wanted a way to take my older rechargeables and 'refresh' them. This charger does all of that, it's perfect.
You simply put in 1 to 4 batteries and it figures out the optimal way to charge them to give them maximum life. You can tweak settings to make it go faster, watch what level it's at, how long it's been going etc. but you don't need to. If it's an older battery you can push the 'mode' button and flip it to 'refresh' and it takes a few days and boom, the battery is now acting like new.
Easy to use, doesn't get hot, can charge AAA and AA nickel metal hydride and NiCads.
I'm enjoying it so much that I might actually get a 2nd one as my only 'complaint' is that it only holds 4 batteries at a time.

I really have nothing to add since so many people have already extensively reviewed this product. All I can say is if you've bought a set of rechargeable batteries that included a charger, throw it out (or save it for traveling) and use this instead. Not only will it extend the life of your batteries, making your investment even more worthwhile, but it will also make your life easier, primarily because you can charge your batteries independently. This is very useful because many toys and flashlights these days run off 3 batteries, which would otherwise be very cumbersome to charge in a 'generic' charger (since they can only charge pairs). I'm not a power user so I can't comment on the advanced functions, but I'm sure as I play with it I'll find it more and more useful. My only minor gripe is that the price on Amazon fluctuates constantly, and I bought it during a "high". Still, definitely worth the money. If you haven't bought batteries yet, I strongly recommend Sanyo Eneloops (or any of their rebranded batteries, including Duracell "white-tops", President's Choice (in Canada), etc).

Nice charger, would buy again. We use it to charge batteries for our 10 unit fleet of company cameras, it has extended the life of our rechargeables.
