"Great camera, great features, great quality" 2010-11-03
By T. Currens (Los Angeles, CA)
This camera is very lightweight, easy to carry in your pocket. Shoots quickly, which is a must for me, and the opposite of the last Canon I bought just months before this one. LCD screen is amazing, the quality is good and it takes far less blurry pics. I would say I had a 7.1 megapixel Canon that shot quicker, far fewer blurry pics than any of the newer models, but this one is still very good. Lots of great picture shooting modes, which are great for getting creative with some shots on the fly. It's sharp looking, zoom is decent. Definitely recommend this camera for any amateur that likes to take pictures and wants a decent camera.

"Not the same as the Best Buy model" 2010-11-03
By N. Howard
Let me first start by saying that this is the 2nd Cannon SD1400 I have purchased. I bought a black one from Best Buy first then a silver one from Amazon later. I'm not sure if it's because of the color difference or if there has simply been a change in manufacturing locations. The first black one I bought from Best Buy was actually made in Japan. The silver one from Amazon is made in China. Normally that wouldn't be a big deal to me, but I did notice differences between the two cameras. The one made in Japan had a slightly better resolution screen on the back and was much faster moving through the menu system. The one made in China had a lower resolution screen and doesn't move as quickly through the menu items. I can't say that I notice a difference in picture quality so the important part seems to work the same. You can definitely save a few dollars by ordering from Amazon, but be aware you may wind up with a little slower Chinese made model compared to if you bought it elsewhere.

For the real review section here's what I think of the camera. First the size is wonderfully small. It's so easy to carry, it's a very compact camera and has no sharp edges on it. Secondly are the buttons. They can be somewhat hard to find and press because they are completely smooth next to the surface of the camera. You can't necessarily go just by feel, you need to look at what you are pressing to make sure it's the right button. Picture quality seems to be very good when the right picture mode is used. In auto mode it does a good job of trying to guess and pictures usually turn out just fine. However sometimes it doesn't do it properly and then you need to change it to manual mode. You can adjust just about every setting you can think of in manual mode. The one I have found most useful is Low Light mode. You will always want to switch to this when shooting in low light conditions. It makes a world of difference in how the picture turns out.

So 4 out of 5 stars seems about right for this camera. It's very good but not perfect at everything. You only get 4x optical zoom because of the small form factor. You do have digital zoom to go further if you really need to. Overall if you need a small camera that can take great pictures this camera will work for you. If you need more optical zoom or professional looking photos you will need to buy a bigger more expensive camera. Overall I think this camera is a good purchase.

"Don't be deceived. Read Carefully. No SD Memory Card Included." 2010-11-02
By thatsallshewrote
If I based my number of stars solely upon how I predict this camera will work, I probably would have given it 5 stars. However, I'm giving it only 4 stars because I feel that it should have included the SD memory card. I'd like to try this camera out, but because it didn't come with a memory card, I can't. I should have read the contents of the box more carefully, but, instead, I read about all the neat things it does.

It does NOT come with an SD memory card, so now I have to buy that separately in order to actually take a picture. My son bought this same camera and his purchase included the memory card, so I just "assumed" that mine would come with it, too. So make certain that you read the ad more carefully than I read the ad. You're buying JUST the camera --WITH NO memory card, and you will need the memory card to take pictures.

Disappointed -- but it's my fault for not reading the contents description more meticulously.

"Great "tiny" camera" 2010-11-02
By KrossXC (Tampa, FL USA)
This camera is awesome, I was amazed how small it is compared to the sd1200.

Darkness:

Only flaw is that it sometimes blurs photos in the dark. However, its important to remember that this is NOT THIS CAMERAS fault, it's just a problem for all point-and-shoots. The sensor is too small to take in enough light. You want great photos in the dark, buy a DSLR camera for 500+ and no chance its going in your pocket.

Love this camera. great buy. very happy with the pics!

"If you are trying to decide which Canon Powershot to get...." 2010-11-01
By HWM (Colorado)
...don't get this particular one.

This review is for someone who has decided to get a Canon Powershot, and they are trying to decide from among the many models available.

Many of the bad reviews for this model are from folks who haven't bought a digital camera in years, so they are comparing today's cheap, fast little models to much older, more sturdy models. That's not to say that they are wrong in their reviews, just that you need to take the review in context.

We buy mid-priced ($200 - $400) digital cameras about twice a year, and have several (more than 4) Canon PowerShots. So, we know what is on the market now, and what to expect from a Canon Powershot in this price range.

We selected this one because it was a recent model (less than 1 yr old), had the features we wanted, the color was fun, the price was reasonable and the ratings were decent (120 ratings averaging at 4 stars). We are returning it because it sucks.

It's possible we just got a bad camera that slipped through QA (Quality Assurance), and it's also possible that this particular model is very poorly designed and made and you are likely to have the same bad experience.

The focusing mechanism is horrible compared to other Canon Powershot released in the last 24 months. You will have more out of focus photos than you expect or than you should get.

The flash sensor is also very poorly done and you will have several dark photos, even when you get your scene selection right for the particular conditions.

We are returning this camera, and we will give Canon one more chance by ordering a different model, although in general we find that their lens retracing mechanism is substandard and breaks far too easily (search for "lens error canon" and you'll see how many folks complain of this), rendering the entire camera useless.
