On the other hand, if you are a hardcore reader with high demands on your hardware this might be just the thing for you.
Contrast is superb compared to my previous reader (iRiver Story). Much faster than anything I've seen before and with built in 3G connection you are sure to never run out of books. The keyboard is scaled down to a minimum, but hey; it's for reading, not typing, right?
Amazon advertises Kindle DX model with the "text to speach" function. I haven't tried it and I have no interest to do so either. I wanted a reader, nothing else. I can see the benefits of being able to buy books and subscribe to newspapers and so on, but frankly it would still be a good reader even without those funktions. Whispernet is really nice for receiving books and news.
Also if you use other devices for reading, like your phone or computer, the sync funktion to keep up with your reading is really good.
Scaling of fonts works very well and the formatting isn't affected as much as I expected. Even with really large fonts the text is still readable.
The good:
Large screen fits the same amount of text as a normal book
Font scaling works fine with formatting
Contrast is really great. Background is still a bit "gray" but much better than my previous reader
Built in 3G (easily turned of to save power)
Good looking!
Charges with a standard micro USB contact.
The bad:
It is quite heavy. Not compared to a properly binded hardcopy but compared to most pockets it is heavier.
Being left-handed, I would really like to have buttons for changing pages on the left side of the reader as well .
Rather expensive. Amazon should throw in a few books free of choise and free of charge to make it more attractive.
I know I bought it from US but couldnt a European power plug be offered?
Conclusion:
If you like reading, get one!
Get some kind of cover for it as well. Protect you precious gem!
